CERT Program Announces Animal Response Modules

E-mail Print PDF

FEMA announces the release of supplemental training modules, CERT Animal Response I and CERT Animal Response II.

The two modules confirm that CERTs are expected to assist animals and their owners during disasters. They provide CERTs with understanding and basic skills needed to perform this function.

The modules do not replace specialized animal disaster response teams, such as DART or CART. However, it clarifies that CERTs can be used to provide welfare checks on animals and perform light search and rescue. While the modules do not (yet) provide Pet First Aid and CPR Training, local CERT groups are authorized to complement these modules with locally approved training.

The new Animal Response modules are the first in a series of supplemental training modules building on the disaster response training that program participants receive in the CERT Basic Training course.  The supplemental modules are designed to expand the skills of CERT members and teams, and to increase CERT’s ability to support emergency response professionals.  The Animal Response modules, as well as other CERT supplemental training to be released in the future, are intended for those who have completed the basic training.  To view the materials, please go to Training Materials on the CERT home page and then select CERT Supplemental Training, http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/training_downloads.shtm#animal.

All usDART teams stand ready to teach the new modules upon request in their operational areas. Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for more info.

Although the modules are geared towards CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) members, they are of interest to members of local, community-based groups interested in building disaster resilient communities.
