Microchip your pet!Denise Shepard lost her 3-year-old Boston Terrier-French bulldog mix in January and could not stop wondering where he was. She ran ads, put up signs and offered rewards. But Frankie was not found.

That is: until Frankie picked Mark Feldstein as his saviour. Mark did the right thing, called police, who met him at the Wheeling animal hospital to have the dog scanned.

Alyssa Roberts, pet adoption coordinator at Wheeling Animal Hospital and Pet Resort, pushed a button on a portable scanning device and ran it over the dog's back to read his microchip. "And there it is, there's his information, that quick, Roberts said.

The vets then put in a call to Home Again, the microchip company that keeps the pet records. "They tell you the owners name and where he's from," said Roberts. "And we noticed it was Battle Creek, Michigan, and right away I thought this is a story to tell."

And a reunion in the making. After a four-hour drive, the owners arrived. "I would recommend to anybody to have your dogs chipped. If he hadn't been chipped, he wouldn't be coming home today," said Shepard.

Micro-chipping your pet costs about $65. You can ask your vet about it.
Denise Shepard probably also wishes she had some sort of GPS to know where Frankie's been all this time. Somebody had been taking care of him, and Shepard says she's grateful.
